Friday Romance: First Date
Peter melted into his chair. The meeting that could’ve been an email had gone on for nearly an hour. He made sure his laptop’s camera was off before placing his face into his hands.

Would Friday come any sooner if he took a midday nap?
It wasn’t long before he heard his phone ring. Out of habit, or perhaps penance, he’d made his ring tone the same as the phone his parents had mounted to the wall in the kitchen when he was growing up. He checked to see who was calling… His boss.
“Hello?”
“Glad I caught you, Peter. Wasn’t sure if you’d be taking your lunch after that whopper of a meeting.”
“I’m still here. What can I help you with?”
“I have to meet with a sales representative later today, or rather, I’m supposed to. I know this isn’t something you normally do, but…”
Peter placed the phone against his chest and let out a heavy sigh.
“What time and where?” he asked.
“Perfect. The Lantern Inn. There’s a diner attached. It was her recommendation. Six o’clock. Her name is Rose.”
“I’ll be there.”
Peter closed his laptop for the day at 5:00 pm. He dragged his hands down his face, knowing the day wasn’t over yet.
He always wore a button-up dress shirt for work, but since he worked from home and all of his meetings took place online, he often wore casual pants or even gym shorts. To prepare for his meeting with the representative, he changed into a pair of khaki slacks.
“Should I wear a tie?” He looked at himself in the mirror. “Eh. It’ll be fine.”
According to his phone, The Lantern Inn was a thirty-minute drive from where Peter lived. He had fifteen minutes to spare before he’d have to drive. He put on a pot of coffee and scanned through the dating app on his phone.
“Rose,” he said as he swiped. “Didn’t know it was so common.”
After matching with Rose, he struck up a conversation. She replied almost instantly. Peter smiled. The fifteen minutes he’d had left disappeared, and before he knew it, he was running late. He filled his to-go mug with coffee and headed out the door.
When he arrived at the Inn, he noticed the parking lot nearby the diner was almost empty. He counted four cars, some of which presumably belonged to the people who worked there.
He entered the diner and noticed a woman sitting alone in a corner booth. The booth could have easily fit at least six people, but seeing as the diner was empty, they may as well have their meeting in the most comfortable spot.
“Rose?” asked Peter. He couldn’t believe it. She matched the profile picture of the woman he’d matched with on the dating app.
“Peter?”
“Sorry I’m late.”
She laughed.
“No worries. I take it you don’t live close?”
“Half hour. I lost track of time when we were messaging.”
“It certainly passed the time,” she replied. “Typically, I’d be messaging with someone for at least a week before meeting them out.”
“Duty calls,” he replied. “Leo mentioned to you I’d be taking his place, right?”
“He did.” She patted the spot next to her. “Take a seat. We’ll talk business and pick up our conversation from where we left off afterwards.”
