Randy enjoyed going to the theater after work every Friday. It gave him something to look forward to each week, and for the past three weeks, he’d found even more to look forward to. Isabelle enjoyed the same routine. They learned this about one another when they were the only two people in the theater for a romantic comedy movie.
Isabelle had been enjoying the same routine for six weeks until they crossed paths. Her work at the hospital was demanding, and it gave her pleasure knowing she’d be able to sit and enjoy a movie after another busy week. She’d been working at the hospital for two months until someone put the idea in her ear. Her co-worker Amanda enjoyed the routine at her own local theater.
“Butter with a bit of popcorn,” joked Randy. The teenager behind the snacks counter nodded, seemingly understanding what he actually meant. Randy looked over at Isabelle and noticed her grin.
“Popcorn with extra butter,” corrected Isabelle. She nudged Randy in the arm.
“How was work today?” asked Randy.
Isabelle let out a long sigh.
“I’m exhausted,” she said. “There were about eighty cases today. Usually, there’s only sixty or so. This is only the second time this has happened since I started, so at least it’s not a super common thing.”
“Still doesn’t make it any easier.”
“You’ve got that right. I’m looking forward to relaxing with some popcorn and watching this movie. What about your day?”
“My back is aching from today, but at least the warehouse is finally stocked. So many things have been on back order for months.”
“I’m sure your boss is happy.”
Randy smiled and rolled his eyes.
“I’m so happy for my boss.”
Isabelle giggled.
“Here’s your popcorn,” said the teenager. “Anything else?”
“Two sodas,” said Isabelle. She turned her attention to Randy. “This will be my treat, since you paid the last time.”
“But you paid the time before that,” he replied.
“Then I guess we’ll have to make a habit of this.”
During the movie, Randy placed his hand on the armrest between him and Isabelle. It hadn’t crossed his mind what it might’ve meant, but when Isabelle placed her hand on his, he couldn’t help but blush. Luckily for him, the theater was dark. He turned to Isabelle, but her eyes were on the screen. He when back to watching the movie, but couldn’t help but notice out of the corner of his eye that Isabelle was now looking at him.
“Randy,” whispered Isabelle.
“Isabelle,” he replied.
“Do you think we’ll see movies together forever?”
The question lingered in the air for a moment. Randy could feel his chest fluttering. He couldn’t have imagined meeting someone like Isabelle. Her beauty belonged in the movies. She belonged on the screen.
“I’d like that,” he replied.
As the credits rolled, they shared a kiss.
