Spencer arrived at his parent’s house at 5:00 pm. He recognized his father’s new car in the driveway from a picture his mother sent him earlier in the week. The car was a red convertible, with black rims and tinted windows. It was the exact car Spencer had dreamed of owning someday as a child.
He locked the doors of his own car, a ten-year-old sedan he’d bought used nearly six years ago.
The keys to his parent’s house were alongside the keys to his apartment. He unlocked the top and bottom locks before entering.
The inside of the house still looked the same, even though he hadn’t lived there in five years. The only difference was a collection of plates mounted on the wall beside the kitchen table. Possibly some home décor his mother had seen at a friend’s house and wanted to replicate.
Spencer walked down into the basement to begin his tasks. His parents, for the first time in decades, were taking a vacation. It was his job to watch over the house while they were gone.
He went into the storage room in the basement and emptied the dehumidifier. His next task, per the list on the kitchen counter, was to mow the lawn. He spent some time in the storage space, looking through the things he’d left behind. He noticed a box behind his stack of comics. The box read in black marker “Dave’s”. Dave was his father’s name.
After removing the box from behind his comics, he opened it. Inside, he found relics of his father’s life before Spencer came into the picture. There were albums filled with pictures of his father alongside his friends, some of whom he still saw. There was a pint glass that read, “This glass was stolen from Lenny’s Hideaway”. Spencer smiled.
He looked deeper into the box and found a blue hat with the logo of the town’s baseball team. The logo was from forty years ago and had gone through several updates since then.
Spencer placed the hat on his head and put the box back where he’d found it.
As he walked upstairs, his phone vibrated in his pocket.
It was a message from his wife.
“It’s nice of you to do this for your parents. I know you haven’t seen eye to eye with your father in a long time. I know he appreciates it.”
