Harry couldn’t remember the code to get into his own garage. The “contraption”, as he called it, served no purpose at all, but for whatever reason, his son got it installed for him as a surprise birthday present. He wanted to say he didn’t need it, but he loved his son and appreciated the gesture.
He grunted and walked to the front door.
“At least my key still works to this place,” he said. Luckily, the key did still work. He let himself into the house and walked, without taking his shoes off, to the door leading to the garage. From there, he opened the garage door and got back into his car so he could drive it in.
After dressing down for the night, he made his way into the kitchen to prepare himself a snack before dinner. As he poured cereal into the bowl, he heard the garage door opening.
“Harry,” said his wife Pam when she opened the door. “Are you in here?”
“Hey,” he said from the kitchen. “How was work?”
“I had the most wonderful day,” she said. “And you?”
“Great,” he replied. “Kyle, the new kid, he brought in new jerseys for the work softball league. I’ve got it in the back seat of my car. I’ll have to show you, maybe after dinner.”
“I’m glad to hear it. How’d you do with the new garage door code? I know you had some,” she coughed into her hand, “opinions on the matter.”
“I can’t for the life of me remember the code,” he replied. He poured milk over his cereal and then plopped his spoon into the bowl.
“You should put it in a note on your phone.”
“I can put notes in my phone?”
“Never mind.” She smirked and walked over to the pad of paper next to the house phone. “We should really get rid of this phone. Only the kids ever call it, and they could just as well call our cell phones.”
“I’ll add it to the list,” he replied.
“Here’s the code. I wrote it down for you. Place this in your wallet so you won’t lose it.”
“What would I ever do without you?”
“What did you ever do before me?” She smiled and walked down the hall towards the stairs.
Harry smirked. He picked up a spoonful of cereal and took his first bite.
“Harry…”
“Yes?”
“Did you wear your shoes in the house?”
