Friday Romance: Something Familiar
Kevin arrived home to find the front door already unlocked. Peculiar, but he’d asked his mother to stop by and feed his cat since he had to work late. He cracked the door open and stepped inside.
Kevin arrived home to find the front door already unlocked. Peculiar, but he’d asked his mother to stop by and feed his cat since he had to work late. He cracked the door open and stepped inside.
Penelope, his cat, greeted him at the door.
“You okay?” he asked. He placed his briefcase, which he used to hold a couple of folders and his lunch, by the door and picked up Penelope. He cradled his cat in his arm and pulled his phone out of his pocket.
From his recent calls, he dialed his mother.
“Hello,” she said. “I fed Penelope. Are you home now?”
“I am,” he replied. “I just wanted to ask if you left the front door unlocked. Penelope is okay, but I’m feeling uneasy about it.”
“Don’t be upset with me, but I did it on purpose.”
“On purpose? Why would you do that?”
“You’ll find out soon enough. Have a wonderful night.”
Kevin placed his phone on the kitchen counter and kissed Penelope’s head before setting her down.
“If only you could talk,” he said. “I’m sure you’ve seen what’s been going on here.”
Penelope gave a brief reply, of which Kevin could not understand.
The stairs creaked as he headed upstairs. Moreso than usual? He couldn’t be sure. His senses felt heightened as he grew closer to the top of the stairs. Could someone be waiting for him? Where could they be hiding?
“Hello? Is anybody up here?”
There were only two rooms upstairs, the master bedroom, which included a bathroom, and a spare room, which Kevin jokingly referred to as Penelope’s room.
He checked the spare room. Empty. He swallowed a gulp and felt it travel all the way down.
If someone was still in his house, they’d be in the master bedroom. Who had his mother let in?
The door creaked louder than the stairs as he opened it.
“Hello?”
“Surprise!”
Kevin took a step backwards and placed his hand over his chest.
“Stephanie?” he said. “Thank goodness it’s you.” He placed his hands on his knees.
“I didn’t mean to startle you,” she said. “I thought it’d be cute to surprise you.”
Kevin smiled.
“You definitely surprised me. What time did you get in?”
“An hour ago, maybe more. Your mom picked me up. I thought, since you’d be coming home soon, that I’d hide, and well, little did I know you’d be working late tonight when I booked my flight.”
“Shouldn’t you still be studying abroad? Not that I’m happy to see you.” He walked over and embraced her in a hug.
“I’m home for a week, and then I’ll head back. What’s for dinner around here?”
“Let’s order pizza,” he said.
“From the place down the street?”
“Yup. I could go for something familiar tonight.”
“You’ve had enough surprises?”
He laughed.
“Yup.”
