Friday Romance: First Haircut
“His first haircut,” said Shannon. She covered her mouth with her hands and looked as if she were about to cry. “I wish I could’ve been there. It was probably the cutest thing ever.”
Frank undid his son’s seat belt and carried him into the house. He could hear his son trying to say something. “Dada”, perhaps? He smiled. His first word? Could it be? The next utterance sounded more like “trissy”. He couldn’t make sense of it.
“How’d it go?” asked Frank’s wife, Shannon.
“Let me know what you think,” replied Frank. He walked over to his wife with his son, Jeremy, in his arms.
“His first haircut,” said Shannon. She covered her mouth with her hands and looked as if she were about to cry. “I wish I could’ve been there. It was probably the cutest thing ever.”
“He looked like he was about to cry when I put him in the chair, but the hairdresser was a real pro. She had a stuffed dinosaur ready for him. Speaking of, I must’ve left it in the car.”
“She let you keep it? That was nice.”
“It was an extra ten dollars on the haircut,” he looked at his son in his arms, “but he had a vice grip on that thing like you wouldn’t believe. It’s of his favorite dinosaur, too.”
“The triceratops?”
“Yeah. I figure we can bring the dinosaur with us next time, too.”
“Clever.”
“Maybe that’s what he was trying to say when I took him out of the car.”
“He spoke?”
“He muttered. Don’t worry. You didn’t miss the first word. Did you finish what you were working on?”
“I did, and I so appreciate you running this errand. I know you planned today to be a restful day. My presentation is all ready for tomorrow.”
“I’m glad to hear it.” He placed Jeremy on the couch and sat beside him. He brushed his hand through his hair. “I just realized something.”
“What’s that?” asked Shannon.
“I could really use a haircut.”
