Bradley sat in his chair beside the window. He looked out and noticed a deer walking through the forest. Where could it be going? He thought back to when he was a child. He and his friends could spend an entire afternoon exploring the woods behind his parent’s house. One summer, they found an abandoned cottage, far back across the river. Bradley chuckled, remembering how muddy he was when he finally returned home. His father, endearing as ever, hosed him off in the side yard.
“Let’s just get you cleaned up before your mother gets home,” said his father.
The home he grew up in was less than an hour’s drive away. He wondered what his mother could be up to as he spun his phone in his hand.
She was the third most recent call in his history. Bradley pressed her number, having simply given her the moniker “Mother” in his contacts.
The phone rang.
“Hello, Bradley.”
“Hey, mom. How are you?”
“Can’t complain. I’m on the deck watching a deer in the woods.”
Bradley laughed.
“I’m doing the same thing,” he replied. “Except we don’t have a deck over here.”
“You will someday. Priorities. How is Lisa doing?”
“She’s well,” he replied. “Speaking of, she should be home any minute. I’ll have to place our takeout order soon.”
“Don’t let me stop you. Were you calling to check in with me?”
“I have some news to share.”
“News? I wonder what it could be…”
“Do you want to guess?”
“New car?”
“No. Although, that’s not a bad idea.”
“Will you be getting a deck?”
“Not any time soon,” he replied.
“I can’t imagine what else. New job?”
“Three strikes. I didn’t exactly provide any clues. I wanted to call you before the news got out.”
“What is it?” she asked.
“You’re going to be a grandmother.”
There other end of the phone went silent. Then Bradley could hear his mother sobbing.
“Mom? What’s wrong?”
“I’m happy for you,” she replied. “It’s just… I remember talking about this with your father after you were born. We both imagined what life would be like when you grew up. When you had a family of your own.”
“I miss him.”
“I miss him, too. Your baby will be so beautiful and grow up in a wonderful home. I can’t wait to be a grandmother.”
“I can’t wait either.”
