Friday Romance: Anniversary Weekend

Jack had an idea for his wedding anniversary, but he wasn’t sure if his wife Carol would be on board. He booked where they’d be staying and decided he was going to surprise her.
A week later, it was time to leave.
“You’re really not going to tell me where we’re going?” asked Carol.
“It’s going to be a surprise,” replied Jack. “You’ll see.”
“You know I’m not the biggest fan of surprises.”
“You’ll be a fan of this one,” he said. “I’m sure of it.”
During the four-hour drive, Jack wasn’t sure if he’d been able to contain himself. The surprise wanted to spill out of him. The words bubbled in his throat. He also wasn’t sure if Carol was going to recall any of the surroundings as they grew closer.
“This looks familiar,” said Carol, “but I can’t place it.”
“That’s the Adirondacks for you,” he said.
“You know, when I was a girl, my father would drive us up here every summer. We’d stay in this log cabin in the middle of the forest. It was the most beautiful place in all the world. I haven’t been to that cabin since I was a young girl, maybe ten or so.”
“That sounds lovely,” said Jack.
“I wonder if it’s still there. Probably not. It was so long ago. Nearly forty years at this point. I can’t imagine it is.”
Eventually, Carol closed her eyes to rest. Jack kept his eyes on the road, a grin on his face stretched from ear to ear.
“Wake up, sleepyhead,” said Jack. He nudged Carol in the shoulder.
“What is it?” asked Carol. She rubbed her eyes. “Where are we?”
“Let’s explore a bit,” said Jack.
He opened the door for his wife, and she got out of the car.
“Is that? No, it can’t be.” Carol rubbed her eyes again. “Is this the cabin I stayed in as a girl?”
“The very same. I called your father and asked if he had any ideas for our anniversary. He told me about this cabin. I checked, and it’s still here. We’ve got it booked for the entire weekend.”
“Jack…”
He watched as Carol wiped a tear from her eye. He walked over and placed his arm around her.
“This is the best gift I’ve ever received,” she said.
“This life with you is the best I’ve ever received,” he replied.
