Friday Romance: What’s For Lunch?
Brendan opened the lunch bag his daughter had given him in the morning. He shook his head when he noticed the first item of what she had packed. A grin creased from ear to ear.
Brendan opened the lunch bag his daughter had given him in the morning. It was the lunch bag she’d used the previous year, featuring characters she’d “outgrown” even though he still caught her often watching the show. He shook his head when he noticed the first item of what she had packed. A grin creased from ear to ear.
“What’s that?”
Brendan looked up and noticed his girlfriend, Jennifer, sitting down across from him. They’d been dating for a few weeks but had worked together for over a year.
“My daughter packed my lunch,” he replied.
“Anything good in there?” she asked.
“Let’s look.”
He pulled out the first item and set it between them on the table.
“A jar of crayons,” said Brendan.
“I hear the green ones taste the best.”
“I’ll take your word for it.”
He couldn’t help but smile when he noticed the next item.
“Is that a bottle of hair gel?” asked Jennifer.
“The most delicious brand on the market,” said Brendan.
“This is too funny. I can’t wait to see what’s next.”
“I’m just hoping to find something edible.”
He placed his hand back into the bag and felt a few different items. Enjoying the anticipation of what he’d find, he pulled out just one.
“A travel size bottle of glue.” Jennifer raised an eyebrow. “Does she think you make arts and crafts during lunch?”
“I wonder if she does.” Brendan laughed. “I pack her a lunch every morning, so I hope she’s eating.”
“Does it contain anything like this?”
“Fruits and vegetables. Sometimes candy, too.”
“Sweets for lunch. I love it. What’s next?”
Brendan reached into the bag and pulled out a slinky.
“Oh my. This lunch is turning more and more into playtime. Should we find some stairs?”
“I really hope the next thing in here is something I can eat.” He picked up the jar of crayons. “The green ones?”
“I dare you.”
“We’ll see if it comes to that.”
His hand sank into the bag, and he felt something wet.
“Uh oh,” he said.
“What is it?”
“It’s wet.”
“This is new. Come on. Come on. What is it?”
He pulled his hand out of the bag and placed a pouch of juice on the table.
“At least you can enjoy this one,” said Jennifer. “It must’ve felt wet from being cold.”
“Hmmm.”
“What’s wrong?”
“I don’t like cherry flavor.”
