Romance Rewind: Late To The Party (Plus... Christmas in July is coming!)

Katelyn arrived at the house party an hour late. Was it still considered fashionably late? She’d spent the better part of the last two hours trying to get her phone back from her dog. Princess, a black lab with white behind her ears, found her way into Katelyn’s life when she got her first apartment at twenty-one years old.
Something about the apartment felt empty, since Katelyn had always had a pet while growing up. It wasn’t until she returned from college that she realized how empty it felt not having a four-legged companion to spend movie nights alongside.
Princess enjoyed the occasional movie night. Much like Katelyn, Princess wasn’t too keen on scary movies. Instead of stealing her phone, if a movie was too scary, the lab would take the blanket and bring it into another room, leaving Katelyn exposed to all sorts of monsters and ghouls. Ever since she was a child, she knew blankets had mystical powers. Every child knows that, but some of them forget as they get older.
Katelyn checked her hair in the rearview mirror. She’d been in the process of getting ready when Princess plucked her phone from beside the bathroom sink. Just like that, before she could respond to her friend Gretchen, the hunt was on.
“I’m busy. Now is not the time for playing.” She set the hair curler down. “What are you doing?”
She followed her dog into the living room, where Princess had her phone sitting on the ottoman as if it were an ancient medallion waiting to be taken. With every step Katelyn took, the lab lowered her head to pick up the phone once more.
“Princess…” She took a step forward.
The lab rushed past her and into the bedroom. When Katelyn made her way in, her dog no longer had possession of the phone. Where could it be?
She tossed pillows aside, regretting that she’d placed a dozen on her bed for decoration. Could Princess have buried her phone amongst them? Not there. She checked underneath the bed, but there was no sign of her phone there either.
She turned to her dog.
“We’re done playing, Princess. What did you do with my phone?”
She noticed the phone was once again in the lab’s mouth.
Princess darted out of the room, and Katelyn followed. To her surprise, and dismay, when Princess lead her to the kitchen, she found her phone plopped into what remained of the dog food.
“Great.”
As Katelyn got out of her car, she noticed an SUV she didn’t recognize pull into the driveway. She walked past, knowing she didn’t want to keep Gretchen waiting any longer.
“Is this the right house?”
She turned around to see a boy with long chestnut hair closing the door to the SUV. “I’m here for Gretchen’s party.”
“It’s the right house,” she replied. “Glad I’m not the only late one.”
“I would’ve been here earlier if not for my dog.”
“What happened?”
