Friday Romance: The In-between
After a dozen bad dates, it seemed like she’d finally met the perfect guy.
Lydia couldn’t believe her luck. After a dozen bad dates, it seemed like she’d finally met the perfect guy. Well, she hadn’t technically “met” him yet, at least not in person.
Trevor seemed easygoing. He enjoyed watching football on the weekends (an interest she shared), and playing softball with friends after work.
She asked him to meet at a coffeehouse just down the road from her, and he agreed. Did he live close by? She thought about asking, but figured they should get to know each other first.
Lydia pulled into the parking lot just as her favorite song was ending. She was a few minutes early, but went in just in case he’d arrived before her. One of them had to get there first, right?
Trevor couldn’t believe his luck as he drove to his first date in almost two years. His match on a dating app he’d been using for over a year would meet him at the coffeehouse down the road. They’d been talking for three weeks, and she seemed just as excited about meeting him. He rolled her name over his tongue to gauge how it sounded next to his own.
“Lydia and Trevor. Trevor and Lydia. Hello,” he said to the rearview mirror, “this? Oh, silly me. I forgot to introduce her. This is my girlfriend Lydia. Or should it be, this is Lydia, my girlfriend?”
Even though he was alone in the car, he could feel his face turning red. He confirmed his suspicions when he looked back into the mirror.
Trevor pulled into the parking lot five minutes early. He listened to his favorite podcast while he waited. As he sat in his car, his windshield giving him a clear view of the entrance to the coffeehouse, he noticed someone familiar enter the building. Lydia?
When Trevor walked into the coffeehouse, he couldn’t believe his eyes. Lydia, somehow, was even more beautiful than her pictures. He removed his coat as he made his way over to the table.
“Lydia,” said Trevor. He draped his coat on the back of the empty chair across from her. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, in person, that is.”
“Trevor.” Her eyes lit up. “Likewise. It feels like we know each other already. It’s odd to think this is the first time we’re actually meeting.”
“It’s a strange feeling,” he replied. “We’ve been saying goodnight and good morning for the past week. I guess we should talk about all the things that happen in-between?”
“I like the sound of that.”
“How about a cup of coffee first? My treat. What’s your typical order?”
Lydia watched as Trevor walked up to the counter to place their order. She blushed when he turned around and smiled at her.
She had a strange feeling in her stomach, butterflies. She hadn’t had butterflies since she was a little girl. The thought caused a grin to crease up the sides of her face.
Trevor returned and placed her order on the table. She picked up the cup, the warm drink felt comforting in her hands.
“So,” said Lydia. “Let’s talk about the in-between.”
