Friday Romance: The Bernard Special
“It’s a concoction,” said Davis. “The owner has mentioned wanting to put it on the menu under the name ‘The Bernard Special’.”
Bernard arrived at the sub shop down the road from his work at 6:00 pm. It was where he found himself every Friday after work. He considered the submarine sandwich a treat to kick off the weekend. Monday through Thursday, he liked to make salads and tacos for work using the meat he prepared on Sunday. Meatballs and hamburgers would find their way into his tacos. Seasoned sirloin would end up in his salads.
For his special Friday treat, he liked to get a chicken sub, complete with hot sauce and coleslaw. There were the other common additions like tomato, lettuce, mayonnaise, and cheese.
Bernard waved to Davis, the same young man who worked every Friday.
“What’ll it be today, Bernard?”
“I’m going to go for the usual,” said Bernard. “No hot sauce this time.”
“You’ve got it.”
“What’s the usual?” asked a woman standing behind Bernard in line.
“It’s a concoction,” said Davis. “The owner has mentioned wanting to put it on the menu under the name ‘The Bernard Special’.”
Bernard blushed.
“It’s nothing special,” said Bernard. “A chicken sub with hot sauce and coleslaw, and then the typical fixings.”
“Coleslaw,” said the woman, “interesting. I’d like to order ‘The Bernard Special’, without the hot sauce as well.” She turned to Bernard. “I’m Lindsay, by the way.”
“It’s a pleasure to meet you,” he replied.
“Will you be dining here or at home?”
“I typically eat at home. Why do you ask?”
“I’m here to grab a bite before going to some event downtown. I was hoping for a little company, but no worries.”
“What event is that?”
“It’s the charity event for the children’s hospital. I go every year. I don’t know how they plan it all so well.”
Bernard smiled.
“That’s my job,” he said. “My team and I plan that event.”
“Then you must go,” she said. “Shouldn’t you be there?”
“Oh,” he replied, “I couldn’t. I plan the events, but they’re much too fancy for me to actually show up.”
“Nonsense. You’ll show up with me. I’m one of the speakers. My company donates every year and they send me over to make a speech.”
“Are you sure?”
Lindsay nodded.
“Then I’d love to,” replied Bernard.
“Your subs are ready,” said Davis.
“Just in time,” said Lindsay.
