Jeremy arrived at the theater twenty minutes before the start of the movie. He liked to get there first, if he could, so he could select the very best seat. He liked to sit in the center seat four rows from the screen. From that seat, the action on screen felt as if it were actually happening right in front of him.
After purchasing his ticket, Jeremy made his way over to the snack counter.
“Large popcorn, extra butter,” said the woman standing in front of him.
When it was Jeremy’s turn, he ordered the same thing, along with a small drink and a box of gummies. With his bounty in hand, he found his way to theater number seven and walked inside, expecting to be the first person to pick a seat.
To his surprise, the woman who’d been in front of him at the snack counter was sitting in… He blinked. It couldn’t be. She was sitting in the very spot he’d shown up early to get. He stood, staring. She waved to him, perhaps noticing his gaze.
Should he sit in the third row? It was excessively close. The fifth? Much too far. Should he sit beside her? The theater was empty, aside from the two of them, so that’d seem a bit off. He opted for the fifth row and sat in the chair right behind her.
Jeremy prepared his movie snack by opening the box of gummies and dumping them into the bowl of popcorn. He sampled a combination of the two and smiled. He’d have to do his best to save the snack for when the movie actually started.
“I take it I’m in your seat?”
Jeremy looked up from his bowl of popcorn to see the fellow moviegoer looking up at him.
“Not technically,” he replied.
“I always try to get here early to make sure I get the best spot. Is that why you’re here so early, too?”
“Well, yeah. It’s okay though, this seat is good, too.”
“It’s a bit high isn’t it?”
“It’s a bit high.” He laughed.
“Do you want to come sit beside me? We both have excellent taste; it’d be a shame for someone who doesn’t appreciate the perfect position of this seat to sit on either side of it.”
“I’d like that,” he replied. He got up from his chair and climbed over onto the seat beside her.
“I’m Jeremy,” he said.
“Cassandra. Are those that gummies in your popcorn? Why didn’t I think of that? I’m going to go get a box from the snack counter. Do you need anything?”
“I’m all set.”
“I’ll be back in a minute.”
“I’ll watch your seat.”
What’s the last movie you saw in a theater? Is there one you’re looking forward to seeing?
