Thomas opened the refrigerator for the tenth time in as many minutes.
“It’s not magic,” said his wife, Carol. She was sitting at the kitchen table working on the morning crossword. “Just because you keep opening it doesn’t mean it’s going to magically fill with your favorite food.”
“We should go shopping soon,” replied Thomas.
“We just went over the weekend. I’ve got an idea. Let’s order out.”
“I can get behind that. I can’t remember the last time we ordered out. What are you in the mood for?”
“Let’s do pizza. We can get the cheesy bread and wings to go with it.”
“We’re really treating ourselves tonight.”
Carol smirked.
“We’re retired,” she replied. “Recently, too. Treating ourselves in what we have to look forward to most.”
Thomas placed his hand on his lower back.
“I don’t miss the days of moving heavy totes first thing in the morning, that’s for sure. Let’s do it. David showed me how to do it on my phone.” He pulled his phone out of his pocket and placed it on the counter. “He said he downloaded an app for us.”
“He showed me, too.” Carol placed her phone on the table. “I wonder what that son of ours is up to tonight. Should we invite him?”
“He and Nancy are going to the middle school to see Laura’s show again.”
“Didn’t she do a great job? We should try to see the play again before it ends.”
“Did you find out how to order?”
“Here it is. I’ll place the order.”
When their food arrived, Thomas couldn’t help but breathe in the aroma as he carried the delivery to the kitchen table. Before digging in, he walked over to the refrigerator to get something to drink. He opened the door and the first thing he spotted was his favorite soda.
“This day couldn’t get any better,” he whispered. He poured himself a glass and placed the bottle back.
On his way to the kitchen table, Thomas turned to the refrigerator.
“Maybe this thing is magic,” he said.
